Extension and refurbishment of kitchen and dining room and the installation of a commercial kitchen within a live college. New plant room, ducting, AHU and associated plant to rooftop using crane lifts.

Coulson Building Group were appointed as principal contractor for the refurbishment and extension of Wolfson College’s main kitchen and dining facilities. The college decanted from their main kitchen and utilised a modular temporary kitchen for the duration of the scheme.

This complex and challenging project entailed the retention and reuse of the existing building, a two storey extension to enlarge the kitchen and back-of-house, change to an AHU instead of gas, opening up of the servery to the kitchen for visibility and interactivity, improved access to the building through new back-of-house lift and new commercial kitchen to better cater for the users of the college. 

All the MEP plant including the AHU was located on the roof which can be accessed via an internal hatch. The 4 tonne AHU was a challenge to get onto the roof due to the close proximity of trees and neighbouring properties.  

Early engagement with two key supply chain, MEP and Commercial Kitchen, were key to the success of the project due to the lengthy lead in periods, coordination between each other and both being on the critical line for the project.

Overall the college were extremely happy with the end result and have ended up with a high end facility for the students and users of the college to enjoy.
