This joint venture between Cambridgeshire County Council and Coulson Building Group was is to expand the current facilities at The Shade Primary School, Soham from IFE to 2FE.
The proposed Phase 2 scheme comprises the construction of a single storey extension linked directly to the south west elevation of the existing school. The extension will contain the following facilities:
6 Classrooms
ICT Suite
Food/Science/DT Room
Staffroom (with existing staffroom to be converted back to use as a classroom)
Circulation
Toilets and Cloakrooms
External Works

Focusing on high quality development and bespoke design, Coulson successfully combined traditional construction techniques with innovative use of a cross laminated timber structure to meet this aspiration.

The project is a prime example of the benefits of our BIM capability, which enabled effective coordination of designs across disciplines within a single model before allowing the cross laminated timber supplier to extract increased levels of detail – improving design, buildability and cost certainty.

Coulson Building Groups primary objective has been to carry out the construction of the new building with minimal impact to the school and surrounding environment. Coulson continued to work closely with local communities, The Shade School and with the project being registered under the Considerate Constructor Scheme, were pleased to advise that we received positive feedback from the schemes monitor, throughout the project duration

Construction of the extension works were completed within the 32 week timescale and to a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rating.
