Extension and Refurbishment to existing science labs to provide further teaching and modern spaces. The science building was located in the middle of the live school site so needed careful management and liaison with the school to mitigate any disruption.
Coulson Building Group were appointed as principal contractor for the long awaited redevelopment of the schools science block which included numerous laboratory refurbishments, office refurbishments, external works and the construction of a two storey extension.
The extension infilled the current courtyard and was constructed out of a steel portal frame, precast floor and brick façade. The additional space, provided two new laboratories along with storage and teaching facilities and was designed as such to compliment the existing buildings and blend in. As part of the schools net zero ambitions, PV panels were installed on the existing roof to reduce carbon in operation.
A major aspect of the works was the refurbishment of multiple laboratories whilst the school remained live and in occupation. Careful planning was required, along with collaboration with the client and design teams, to propose a suitable programme and phased delivery scope.
The location of works were in the middle of a live school and therefore safety to pupils and staff was priority along with mitigating any noise distractions. Coulson worked alongside the school to develop logistics plan with clear segregation between site and school, along with crossing with a fulltime banksman to ensure the safety of pupils when entering the school field.
“Big thank you to yourself and Coulson’s for working us to such a great position considering this very challenging programme and associated logistics. The pupils and staff have been so pleased with the results.” James Petrie, Director of Estates
