Situated in the village of Meldreth, just ten miles south of Cambridge, on the Cambridgeshire/Hertfordshire border. Meldreth Manor provides education, care and therapeutic support for children and young people who have severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties resulting in complex learning needs. Meldreth Manor supports children and young people age 6-19 years who have highly complex learning difficulties and is one of the few schools in the country that also supports young people with complex health needs and associated difficulties such as enteral feeding. These may be as a result of conditions such as cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, degenerative conditions or autism requiring a specialist approach.
Coulson Building Group engaged with the client to refurbish several of there properties within the Meldreth complex. This included the Pear, Plum and Terraces building of which all offer living accommodation. The Rooms are large and wheelchair accessible and can be equipped with assistive technology where required. All the living areas have a kitchen where people are encouraged to get involved in choosing and preparing meals and a large lounge area where residents can relax and socialise with their house mates.
The project was implemented through three phases so that its didn’t effect the day to day activities and maintained all residents onsite without having to make any temporary accommodation of which is incredibly important for their well being. The project entailed improving the fire regulations of the existing building, new access doors, new wide internal doors, floor finishes, ceilings, electrics, nurse call system, ceiling hoists, new bathrooms, new kitchens with rise and fall equipment, improvements of the external landscape and various structural modifications to form open plan living to ensure wheelchairs and beds can be moved throughout the building with ease.
Coulson worked closely with the client to ensure minimal disruption of which was shown when the project was delivered with high praise from the client team and handed over 2 weeks before the proposed completion date.
