Coulson Building Group was appointed as the main contractor for the construction of a new dining hall at King’s College School. The project sought to transform a series of underused spaces into vibrant, welcoming environments for students, staff, and visitors. Delivered in multiple phases, the works were carried out at the heart of a busy, live school environment, requiring careful planning and coordination to ensure safety and minimise disruption throughout the process.

The vision for the project was to create a modern, spacious dining hall with seating for over 150 students, complemented by a bright and inviting reception area that would enhance the visitor experience. The design embraced contemporary aesthetics while respecting the school’s heritage, incorporating bespoke architectural features that added character and uniqueness to the space. Natural light was a key element, flooding the dining hall to create a warm and uplifting atmosphere for daily use.

One of the most significant challenges was working within a live school setting while delivering and major construction project along with complex design elements. Coulson Joinery played a pivotal role in overcoming these challenges, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and technical expertise. Their work included the creation of triangular windows and arched internal and external doors, as well as bespoke timber pieces cloaked in metal for durability and elegance. Among the standout features was a curved fire door, which had to be produced twice to meet stringent certification and installation requirements—a truly unique achievement.

The completed project has transformed the school’s dining facilities into a state-of-the-art space that promotes social interaction and community engagement. The new reception area provides a warm and welcoming entrance, while the dining hall offers a modern servery and comfortable seating for students.
