The works at Milton Road Library was to construct a 7 apartment and library complex. The project commenced with the demolition of an old brick built 1936 single storey library facility, all incoming services were removed, creating a clear site allowing new build construction to proceed.

The initial works included piles reaching depths of 20m, in turn RC pile caps and beams were installed completing the foundation works. The main structure is a steel frame with it spanning over 2 floors, with hollow core infills sitting on shelves incorporated through the steel design across the 1st and 2nd floors. The structural ground floor is block and beam with hollow core planks as the 1st and 2nd floor structure tied into the steel structure appreciating the collateral collapse detailing. The external walls to the library are double block construction, the majority with a stone facade and in part with brick facings to represent the appearance from the existing library. The external walls to the flats were infilled with timber work panelling, with a brick work facing. Aluminium cladding was used within triangle protrusion sections and dormers cheeks. The roofing at MRL is mixed, with some sections a timber hand cut roof, between steel work- receiving slate tiling, and the highest section, ‘I’ beams held in position with hangers, receiving a waterproof covering.

The flat interiors were fit out as follows: all matching in regard to material use, appliance, kitchen and bathroom specification. The internal walls were constructed with metal partitions, skimmed throughout. Flooring to bathrooms- ceramic tiling, bedrooms- carpet, all other areas- engineered oak.

The library interior incorporates offices, WC’s and a kitchen. The main library space is open plan, with two sliding partitions, allowing a multi-functional space.
