Assistant Quantity Surveyor

the role

The Assistant Quantity Surveyor is a key supporting member of the commercial team, contributing to the financial and contractual administration of construction projects. Working under guidance of the Commercial Team, this role assists in the procurement, cost management, reporting, and contractual compliance across schemes up to £15 million.

Core Duties

  • Assist with the day‑to‑day commercial administration of projects, including cost control, reporting, and record keeping.
  • Support the preparation and submission of interim valuations, final accounts, and variation assessments.
  • Assist in the measure and value work in accordance with contract provisions, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Assist in procuring subcontractors by preparing tender documents, analysing returns, and administering contracts.
  • Support the procurement of materials, including take‑offs, quotation analysis, and raising purchase orders.
  • Help manage subcontractor accounts, including payment notices, pay‑less notices, and agreement of variations.
  • Carry out site visits to understand progress, verify measures, and support project teams.
  • Maintain and update cost trackers, change logs, procurement schedules, and commercial registers.
  • Support the Commercial Team with risk and opportunity analysis.
  • Assist in preparing monthly CVRs, forecasts, and cashflow projections.
  • Check and verify dayworks and instruction‑driven changes.
  • Ensure compliance with company procedures, contract requirements, and statutory obligations.
  • Attend progress meetings and assist in preparing commercial reports and documentation.
  • Positively contribute to the development of a collaborative, efficient, and commercially focused project environment.

Quality

  • Assist in delivering a “right first time, on time” service to clients.
  • Ensure commercial documentation is maintained in line with Quality Management Systems.
  • Support senior team members in ensuring supply chain compliance with Employer Requirements.
  • Help maintain accurate commercial records, including drawings, specifications, procurement files, and correspondence.

Health, Safety & Environment

  • Adhere to the Company’s Health & Safety procedures and support compliance with CDM regulations from a commercial standpoint.
  • Support the wider project teams in promoting a positive safety culture.
  • Monitor waste‑related costs and ensure compliance with environmental policies.
  • Escalate any health, safety, or wellbeing concerns to the Commercial Manager.
  • Take reasonable care for personal health and safety and contribute to a safe working environment for colleagues and supply chain partners.

Programming

  • Provide commercial input into short‑term and long‑term programmes, ensuring cost, time and contractual impacts are fully understood.
  • Ensure procurement of the supply chain aligns with the requirements of the project programme.

Communication

  • Build strong working relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and internal project teams.
  • Attend subcontractor and project meetings, recording relevant commercial actions where required.
  • Communicate clearly and proactively with site teams to ensure commercial alignment with daily and weekly activities.
  • Contribute to meeting minutes, progress reports, and other commercial documentation.
  • Engage in learning and development activities and work closely with senior team members to develop commercial competencies.

General skills and knowledge

  • Basic understanding of JCT & NEC contracts.
  • Awareness of construction methods and project delivery processes
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Microsoft Projects.
  • Strong numerical, organisational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to identify potential risks and support cost‑control measures.
  • Willingness to take responsibility for tasks and work proactively.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Interest in developing commercial and contractual knowledge.

experience & qualifications

  • Experience in a construction commercial role (placement or 1–2 years desirable).
  • Exposure to subcontractor administration or project cost control beneficial.
  • Experience supporting measurement, procurement, or valuations advantageous.
  • Degree (or working toward a degree) in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline is desirable.
  • CSCS card or willingness to obtain one.
  • Full UK driving licence beneficial.
