I was attracted to Coulson Building Group programme because I felt it offered me the opportunity to have a greater role and responsibility than with a larger contractor. The company’s programme allowed a good mix of site and office work. Coulson’s project sizes meant during the year I would be able to work on a wider range of projects than with a larger contractor.
During the year I worked on a broad range of projects in several departments in the construction team. The majority of the year was spent working as a project assistant for the main contract works team including Gravel Hill Farm, Gonville Place refurbishment, Cambridge Regional College Phase 2b and various Ministry of Defence projects. The role on each project would be different and with increasing responsibility as the year progressed. The roles included project administration, health and safety, subcontractor coordination and material take offs.
The most memorable aspect of my placement with Coulson was the opportunity given to me to site manage and safely deliver a renovation project. I was given sole responsibility for the day-to-day site delivery which was very rewarding for me personally and professionally. I benefited greatly from the experience and really highlighted the progression possible within Coulson.
To be successful with Coulson requires the ability to work effectively within a team to enable the successful delivery of projects. However the right candidate should be able to accept responsibility, be proactive, engage with the projects on every level and take ownership of the roles you are given. The ability to prioritise tasks and manage your time effectively over several projects simultaneously is essential.
I would recommend the Coulson placement programme because it offers students an opportunity to contribute in a very real way, gain valuable experience and impact on the business positively.
