Coulson are a medium sized company, this made me feel as if I would have a more rounded experience and able to get involved more areas in comparison to working for a larger company.
Coulson have employed undergraduates who have performed well in their placement year after their studies.
I have been involved in many areas, supporting senior managers, estimators and quantity surveyors.
I have been involved in the pre- construction stages of 4 jobs so far; Millfield School, Cavalry School, Hinchingbrooke School Sports Centre and University of Cambridge Library- Refrigeration works. On all 4 of these jobs I have assisted our Senior Estimator; my main responsibilities have been taking off quantities to aid the Senior Estimator in producing the Bill.
In the construction stages I have been responsible for producing all the health and safety documentation before the start of a number of recent jobs. I have also provided site cover for 2 weeks; Emmanuel College was my first experience of prolonged site cover, I found the experience challenging but enjoyable and very beneficial. During the 2 weeks I was responsible for the coordination of subcontractors, organising deliveries to and from site and holding progress meetings with the client and architect.
The placement so far has been greatly valuable, and it’s given me a huge insight into the world of construction. The benefit of Coulson in my opinion is the openness of the company, and how people work as a team, the culture of the company is to succeed together. Coulson have made me appreciate that work is a place for enjoyment as well as hard work. It is a hard working environment; they only employ people who are prepared to work hard. However Coulson prides itself on being a friendly, fun, welcoming place.
Looking towards the next few months I am full of optimism. Over the last few months I have learnt an incredible amount. During my short time at Coulson, everything has been put in perspective, the purpose of my degree has been made very clear and similarly my future aspirations. I hope the next few months give me a platform to learn more, work even harder and impress my colleagues and senior management.
